DVD: Do The Right Thing 20th Anniversary

I am proud to say Do The Right Thing, my favorite movie by Spike Lee, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. There is a special 20th anniversary edition DVD on sale now. I, of course, already have this movie on DVD so I haven't picked up this edition, BUT I will.

Just me:
Just like Spike Lee's School Daze, this movie was an instant classic for me. One of my all time favorite movies. In my opinion, it's definitely Spike Lee's best!!!!

I still remember my first time seeing this powerful film. It came out in 1989 so I was around 10 years old. I was staying the weekend over my Aunt and Uncle's house. My cousin and I were chillin' upstairs in her bedroom doing stupid little kids stuff. And all of a sudden I heard Public Enemy's Fight the Power being blasted through the house...and I mean 'blasted' at full volume. And me, being the curious preteen that I was and an avid hip-hop fan, came running down the stairs at full speed to the basement all the while listening to my Aunt tell my Uncle to turn the music down. And what do I see when I come peaking my head into the room? A short, sassy, Latino woman in a boxing uniform looking like she was dancing and pop-locking to save her life. And even as my Aunt kept saying "You are too young to watch this", it was evident to her I pretty much wasn't moving from my spot...lol. I'm glad she gave up and let me watch it although she made us cover our eyes during the famous 'ice meltdown' scene with Rosie Perez.

The movie just came at the perfect time. The late 80's and early 90's were some of the best years in hip-hop when there were conscious rap artists such as Public Enemy. And this was when everyone was wearing the Africa medallions and Malcolm X hats. I wish we could get those days back.
