The Internet’s most powerful presence
I landed on a great story the other night about one of the most-used and most powerful search engines in the world. CNBC reporter Maria Bartiromo took a look Inside the Mind of Google. It started off briefly with the history of the now giant-sized company of casually dressed programmers and computer geeks started in 1998 by two Stanford graduate students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Of course one can only assume that Google would employ some of the brightest minds on earth. The company appears to be a great place to work with a lot of perks. Some of these perks include Google taking care of mundane details for their employees like doing their laundry or sending buses to pick up their employees who happen to commute to work. The story then covered many topics about Google such as their search engine security, Google Ads, and how they plan to expand the products they offer.
The Security
DID YOU KNOW.....
ALL Google search queries are saved! Yes, every single query you do in the comfort of your home, in your office when you should be working, or on someone else’s computer is saved in Google's gargantuan database. Now many people think the searches they perform on Google are anonymous, as did I. Of course I know the search engine can detect my IP address, my location, and other bits and pieces of information. But in the show it is revealed that all of these billion pieces of info can be stringed together to reveal who you are. Now even still I personally am not alarmed. I haven't 'googled' anything like creating bombs or child porn. But those of you who do...beware. Someone at the Google headquarters might know who you are. When CNBC reporter, Maria Bartiromo, began interrogating a Google rep about this security issue he made it very clear how important it was to safeguard his user's information and privacy. He stated that Google is serious about making its users feel safe because as soon as they did not, they would turn around and use another search engine.
Their Products
Google already has a host of popular products on the market. Some of the products that were discussed during the show were Google Ad Words and the power it has to aid even the smallest companies around the world compete with larger companies, Google Apps and Google Maps which are used by city governments, and Google's attempt to gain market share in the competitive mobile phone business with the Android operating system.
This really was a fun and interesting look into one of the most powerful technology companies in the world right now. You can watch the full episode online on the CNBC website.
