Movie Review: The Invention of Lying

Can you imagine living in a world where NO ONE told a lie?

Well that is the world that screenwriter Mark Bellison lived in played by Ricky Gervais.  This movie starts out with the main character Mark Bellison being excited about going out on a date with Anna McDoogles (Jennifer Garner), a beautiful woman who he's had a crush on for a long time.  They are not too far along in the date when Anna lets Mark know he doesn't stand a chance of being with her.  She lets him know he's fat, doesn't have enough money, is not successful enough, and with no doubt she's out of his league.  As harsh as that sounds, Mark's situation gets worse.  He wakes up the very next morning going into a job he's worked for years knowing along with his co-workers that he will be getting fired.  To top it all off Mark's rent is due and he could get evicted from his apartment while at the same time dealing with his sick, elderly mother.

It does start to get better for Mark though....well kinda.  One day Marks finds out his mother is in the hospital and on the verge of dying.  As she is laying in the hospital bed frightened of what will happen and where she will go when she dies, Mark can't help but to lie to her.  He tells her tales of the big man in the sky, how she will never grow old again, and be eternally happy.  And as these stories make his mom smile Mark is content that his mom died happy and he lets out a sigh of relief.  But little did he know that the doctors, nurses, and hospital personnel were listening in to his tales as well.  And soon after word spread around town that this frumpy, fat guy knew all about The Afterlife and was labeled a prophet.

Just Me:  I really enjoyed this movie and knew after the first couple of scenes that this would be a classic.  The main character Mark Bellison starts off setting the tone for the whole movie.  He lets you know what type of world you will see in the movie:  a world where everyone tells the truth.  There's no flattery or fiction.  And it's naturally accepted because that's just the way they are.

"Look I'm not coming into work today.  No, I'm not sick.  I just hate it there."
"Oh your baby is so ugly.  It's like a little rat."

What I love about the movie is the honesty.  Just look at the two previous quotes above from the movie.  Haven't you called into work with that thought in your head while faking a cough and letting them know you will be 'out for the day'?  Or haven't you looked at someone's baby and had to force a smile and lie about how cute they are?  The answer is YES you have or you're actually lying to yourself.  What makes this movie so hilariously funny is most of the honest and quite insulting comments made in this film are thoughts that many of us have had at one point or another about someone else.  Now I'm not saying that people shouldn't be polite and hold back from harsh criticisms towards others.  I'm just saying that I know most if not everyone who watches this movie can relate to it from the giving or receiving end.

Another characteristic of this film everyone can relate to is Mark's search for happiness.  In the movie he's a middle-aged, boring, screenwriter with little to no friends or a love life.  His career is in the toilet and he is on the verge of losing the only person on earth who loved him unconditionally.  And during this experience Mark has an epiphany and realizes that he does control his destiny and can turn things around in his life.  And so he takes charge of his life and gets his career back on track and goes after the woman he wants.  Now he lies in the process of doing all this.  But hey, no ones perfect.

I'm a sucker for British comedies.  This isn't exactly a British comedy but an American comedy with British flare.  This is due to the fact that the star of the film, Ricky Gervais, wrote, produced, and directed this film.  I found it amazingly funny.  It had that subtle comedic timing where it takes you a couple of seconds to realize what the characters just said.  And then you think to yourself, "Did they really just say that?".  Now this is what I would call a simple comedy.  The movie can be a little slow for some people.  But overall it's entertaining to say the least.  So I would say "Go See It!".  It's funny as hell.  And I'm not lying to you.
